Eagles emphasises the traits of courage as well as "daring, nerve, and chivalry," and thus its members are generally regarded as brave, though sometimes to the point of recklessness. According to The Headmaster, members of other houses, particularly the Serpents sometimes feel that Eagles engage in "pointless heroics."

Serpents tend to be ambitious, shrewd, cunning, and achievement-oriented. They also have highly developed senses of self-preservation. This means they tend to hesitate before acting, so as to weigh all possible outcomes of a decision (and how these outcomes would personally impact them), unlike Eagles, whose chivalrous natures would likely lead them to react immediately and instinctively.
